THE 2 WEEK BACKPACKING JOURNEY TO KRUGER! The bus picked us up at an ungodly hour in the morning. I carried a huge backpack on my back and a small book bag on my front and my hall mate from Malawi gave me some crazy stares followed by a smile and a shake of her head. Me and Ben We headed a few hours by bus with some rest stops in between up to Wilderness, a town on the notorious garden route. They could not have picked a better name for it. We drove through mountains of woodlands before we could get to our campsite and hostel. At the hostel we were greeted by a guy our age named Ben, who quickly showed us where we were setting up camp and gave us a tour of the property. During the tour we saw the oldest building in Wilderness and he gave us the history..  “ Legend has it that the name Wilderness comes from a bride who asked her husband to take her away from the difficulties of 19th century life. She quoted from Haydn's "Creation" in the song ...

End of First Term at UCT

A few updates since last post… Mountain and Ski Club service project, March 10 I volunteered with the UCT Mountain and Ski Club’s Siyenyuka Project. We took 15 high school students from a a disadvantaged area of the Western Cape for their first rock climbing experience at Lakeside Pinnacle in Cape Town. The students proved to be fearless and willing to try anything. By the end of the day every student made it to the top of the wall, some with the help of experienced climbers climbing by their sides. I was last to go up, and as one of the supervisor figures, I was surprised to find that one student wanted to show me what she learned and she fascined my harness and tied my “figure of 8” knot. When she noticed I was a bit nervous, since I am still new at climbing, she cheered me on and pointed out the route she took when she climbed the same wall. I was very impressed and I am extremely excited to see the students again on our next Siyenyuka Adventure! For more photos of us at Lakeside ...

Rotary Scholars Seminar- University of Tampa

Last weekend was my training at the Rotary Scholars Seminar held at University of Tampa! We started the weekend by introducing ourselves to local Rotarians and other scholars both current and former. The other scholars at this seminar were going to Singapore, Australia, England, Spain, Scotland, Ghana, Ireland, and surprisingly there was another scholar planning on attending the University of Cape Town in South Africa at the same time as me! We were given a packet with tips for while we are traveling, and also heard plenty of stories from former scholars of funny situations, overwhelming cultural differences, etc. We were able to practice speaking in front of our peers and watched what our speeches to Rotaries abroad should look like. I was lucky that there were two former scholars at the seminar who studied in South Africa so I was given specific pointers of where to go, where not to go, what to do, and what not to do so that I will stay safe and make the most of my exp...
